Telescopic Fly Rod
Telescopic Fly Rods can be a great addition to your fishing rod arsenal. They’re especially useful if you’re into stalking fish around heavily vegetated streams or lakes. If can be very frustrating getting your rod tangled up in the trees all the time and its easy to break a rod if you’re not careful.
The most common telescopic fly rod around is the Shakespeare Odyssey Telescopic Fly Rod. A 9ft rod 6/7 weight.
Another popular make is the Blackwater Travel Telescopic Fly Rod. Also a 9ft rod but 7/9 weight.
You might also come across a Ron Thompson Scorpion Telescopic Fly Rod. A 9ft rod for lighter 5/6 weight.

Shakespeare Odyssey - Telescopic Fly Rod
Telescopic fly rods have been around for a long time. In the past manufacturers such as St Croix, Winchester and Abu Segra also had telescopic fly rods in their ranges. Some of the older ones were made of metal. I’ve had a metal fly rod years ago and it was very heavy. I’d only ever recommend a metal rod as a collectors piece nowadays.
Anyway for a specialist approach these are very good and something I use quite often. Great for backpacking into remote areas.

With the increase in technology for fly rods I’m surprised that we haven’t seen a high end telescopic fly rod. I know it would become my favourite if it can perform decently.
How much is the Telescopic Fly Rod?
I have an 8′ Trimarc telescopic fly rod. I saw one go for ebay on 8/17/11 for around $13+shipping. I’ve used it up in the depths RMNP and Indian Peaks Wilderness in CO and have had lots of success with it to catch greenback cutts, brookies, and bows. Not the highest quality rod, but it’s lightweight and does the job for long backpacking trips. Decent action for a cheap rod as well.
